UWOSA is an independent union representing approximately 860 administrative and technical staff at the University of Western Ontario. Our members work in every area of the University in a wide variety of roles. We are Academic Counselling Assistants, Admissions Coordinators, Animal Care Technicians, Booth Attendants, Computer Specialists, Dental Assistants, Drivers, Events Coordinators, Faculty Affairs Assistants, Graduate Coordinators, Horticultural Technicians, Laboratory Supervisors, Library Assistants, OSAP Coordinators, Prospect Researchers, Research Assistants, Residence Clerks, Schedulers, Secretaries, Storeskeepers, Technical Supervisors and Undergraduate Assistants (and so much more).

UWOSA appoints new Vice President

UWOSA is happy to announce that the Stewards Council appointed John Critchley as its new Vice President at its meeting today.

John has been actively involved with UWOSA since 2010 and has held a variety of roles, including Council Chair, Area Steward, Health and Safety Officer, President and lead negotiator.

John brings to the role extensive knowledge of the collective agreement and labour law, as well as years of experience assisting members with understanding and ensuring their rights in the workplace.

Reminder - Nominations for UWOSA VP Being Accepted

Dear UWOSA members,

Just a reminder that the union is now accepting nominations for the role of Vice President.

This is a full-time release position, open to all members of UWOSA in good standing, and has a term ending April 30, 2016.

The appointment of the UWOSA Vice President will be made at the Stewards Council meeting on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 12:00pm in the Social Science Centre, Room 9420.

If you are interested in the role, please forward a brief bio to UWOSA's Business Manager, Mary Hay by 4:00 pm on Monday, September 14th.

You will be expected to attend the meeting on September 16th, and to provide a short (maximum 5 minute) presentation on your candidacy for the role before the members of Stewards Council vote.

UWOSA Waits for Chakma

On July 22, 2015, President Chakma sent a memorandum to all members of the University community with a summary of feedback from his 100 Day Listening Tour.

Unfortunately, President Chakma failed to contact representatives from the University of Western Ontario Staff Association (UWOSA), which comprises approximately 1,000 administrative and technical staff at Western. UWOSA would like to bring attention to some of the key areas detailed in Dr. Chakma’s Memorandum.

It was noted that staffing levels and workloads with limited resources is a viable concern. This has been a constant problem that UWOSA has repeatedly brought to the attention of the administration which continues to be ignored. In fact, UWOSA has two active grievances concerning positions which are full-time continuing but currently being filled by part-time, contract employees.

The President also noted that there is a need to examine current practices and timelines surrounding recruitment, staffing, position evaluations and related compensation. UWOSA has seven active grievances addressing violations to vacancies (Article 12) and layoffs (Article 13). There are three outstanding grievances concerning the Job Evaluation Process (Article 44). Our members are fully aware that their union officers have been working diligently since January 2013 to ensure that pay equity is achieved, established, and adhered to at Western. Our members are also aware that Western’s administration continues to create roadblocks and impasses at every step of the process. The administration has even tried to blame the union for its own delays to agree upon fair and equitable point bands to ensure pay equity and job evaluation for all.

President Chakma’s memorandum states that he will continue to meet regularly with internal and external groups of the campus community. UWOSA’s members are an integral part of the campus community - - from drivers to housing clerks, administrative assistants to general stores clerks, research assistants to dental assistants, to name a few. We are proud of the work we do to ensure faculty research receives international recognition, managers achieve department milestones, and undergraduate and graduate students receive the best education and experience. UWOSA remains optimistic for the opportunity to have a meaningful conversation with President Chakma.

UWOSA welcomes Meg Perinpanayagam to her new role as President, and wishes Past President Boun Thai all the best in his new position in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology.

Message from the UWOSA President

Dear UWOSA members,

At our monthly meeting earlier this afternoon, I informed the Council of Stewards about upcoming changes at UCC255. I would also like to share this information with you at this time.

It is with mixed feelings that I report to you today that I am resigning as President of UWOSA.

I was recently contacted about an extraordinary career opportunity back in my home department. One that I could not disregard.

Ultimately, I was successful in the competition and I have accepted the offer.

Although the timing of my resignation isn’t ideal, our Executive and Business Manager are a highly capable, deeply committed team of individuals that will, as they always have, continue the crucial work of guarding our interests and our rights as UWOSA members.

I am forever grateful to the Officers of our Association, to Mary Hay, and to the dedicated members of Stewards Council for giving me the opportunity to represent UWOSA as Steward, Lab and Environmental Safety Committee representative, Health and Safety Officer, Vice President, and President.

I will remain an Executive in the role of Past President beginning August 17th, coincident with Meg Perinpanayagam’s appointment as President.
