Support Western's Librarians & Archivists

Mediated talks between UWOFA-LA and the UWO administration broke down yesterday after extended negotiating sessions with the employer came to a deadlock at 11:00 a.m. UWOFA-LA is now on strike, and pickets have been set up on Richmond Street and Western Road.

What can UWOSA members do to support our fellow unionized employees?

1. Know your rights as a UWOSA member
Your union expects that you will not perform the work of the employees on strike. Article 5.04 in the UWOSA contract ensures that UWOSA members have the right to decline to perform the normal duties of striking or locked-out employees of UWO during a legal strike. Call the UWOSA office at ext 83028 or email if you have any questions or concerns about this.

2. Attend the rally on Friday, September 9th!
A rally will be held at the main university gates on Richmond Street on Friday at 12:15 p.m. Please attend and support the librarians and archivists at Western who are working to secure a fair contract with the UWO Administration.

3. Write the UWO Administration
Email President Chakma ( and Board of Governors Chair Frank Angeletti ( Tell them you support librarians and archivists at Western and the work they do for the entire Western community. Ask them to negotiate a fair and equitable contract.

4. Join UWOFA-LA on the picket line
Show your support by walking with these people for awhile. Together we can make changes on campus

Call to UWOSA Members - Come out and Show your Support for UWOFA-LA!

UWOFA-LA has asked UWOSA to support our Librarian-Archivist colleagues by participating in a series of planned information pickets. The information picket scheduled tomorrow, September 7th, will be held outside Weldon Library at 12:00 pm.

UWOSA Stewards will participate in this information picket, and all UWOSA members are being asked to come out and show their support and solidarity.

See you tomorrow at noon!

Sad News

UWOSA is sad to announce the passing of member Nikki Petrie in the Department of Nursing on August 23rd.

Nikki's department has posted a lovely page honouring her memory at: Our thoughts go out to Nikki's family and friends during this difficult time.

UWOFA-LA, representing librarians and archivists, has been in negotiations with Western's administration since April. Many of these sessions have taken place in the presence of a provincially appointed conciliator. On August 15, the negotiation team requested a "no-board" report, which has resulted in the Librarian and Archivist unit being in a legal strike position at 12:01 a.m. on September 8.

UWOSA is asking all of its members to support Western's librarians and archivists during this time. We will keep you informed of any information pickets or rallies that are planned. Let's make sure we show our solidarity!

Many UWOSA members work in libraries across campus. If you are one of these members, you should be aware of your rights under our contract when it comes to supporting our fellow unions either on strike or locked out here at Western.
