Bargaining Bulletin: May 1, 2010

This is a brief bulletin to bring members up to date regarding the status of bargaining preparation. If you have any questions or comments about this Bulletin or the bargaining process, please get in touch with the Negotiations Committee Chair, UWOSA Vice President Deb Novakowski by e-mail or at extension 87574.

Bargaining Timetable

Our Negotiations Team has met several evenings, along with our Executive, over the last month to prepare a comprehensive package and draft language which has recently been sent to legal counsel for review. Once that review is complete, the package will be ready to present to the UWO.

UWOSA and the UWO have now agreed to meet on Friday, May 28, 2010 to exchange initial bargaining proposals. We will not exchange monetary proposals at this time – in keeping with our own historical practice and that of most unions, we will deal with language issues before tabling monetary proposals.

We have also confirmed the following dates to continue bargaining: June 7, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 & 25. In addition, we are holding July 6, 7 & 8 if needed. We will book further dates if necessary, of course.

While we expect this will be a tough round of negotiations, our goal is to get the best Collective Agreement we can! We do ask for your continued support throughout the process!

Bargaining Process Information Sessions

We receive many questions about the bargaining process, and about the possibility of a strike in particular. We hope, of course, that bargaining can be completed without the necessity of contemplating a strike. However, it is important that we be prepared. The Executive is currently making preparations in case bargaining breaks down.

To assist members in understanding the bargaining process, conciliation & strikes, members of the Bargaining Team are holding a number of sessions at different places on campus over the next few weeks. You need not register to attend – please feel free to attend whichever session may be convenient for you. On each date, the session will be held twice – from noon to 1pm and then again from 1pm to 2pm.

Session dates and locations are:

  • Thursday, May 6 – EC 2130
  • Friday, May 7 – UCC 41
  • Monday, May 10 – SSC 2028
  • Wednesday, May 12 – MC 17
  • Thursday, May 13 – TH 3101

For those unable to attend, or for those who would like to read the presentation in advance, it is available for download.
